Astropy Goes Dutch

Submitter: John Swinbank
Description: Astropy — https://www.astropy.org — is a community effort to develop a common core library for astronomy in the Python programming language, and to foster an ecosystem of interoperable tools based upon it. Over the last decade or so, it's become fairly ubiquitous throughout the astronomical landscape; it has a real impact in making modern astronomy at radio — and other — wavelengths possible.

As a community project, Astropy doesn't have a home base, but rather the team is dispersed around the world. However, a group tries to get together once a year to discuss strategy and future directions for the project. This year, we met at the offices of SURF in Utrecht in the week starting 10 June. Fourteen people came in person, while a further thirteen joined in online.

For the first three days of the week, we enjoyed wide-ranging discussions covering all aspects of the Astropy Project — from a review of the project finances and roadmap, to technical discussions about updates to various programming interfaces. On Thursday, we travelled to ASTRON where we enjoyed lunch at HQ followed by a tour of the Dwingeloo telescope (conducted by Tammo Jan Dijkema), Westerbork (Albert Jan Boonstra) and the LOFAR Superterp (Michiel Brentjens). All of the tour guides were fantastic, and the Astropy Team got a real sense of both the depth of expertise and the enthusiasm to be found at ASTRON. We finished the week with a well-attended all-day Astropy hackathon and tutorial session back at the SURF offices.

The week was a success in every respect: we made progress on some key project issues, we had a great trip to ASTRON and the telescopes, and we reached a wide and enthusiastic community through the hack day. The Astropy Team extends its heartfelt thanks to both SURF and ASTRON for their hospitality!
