Todays Colloquium: Exoplanet Imaging Challenges with an APP Coronagraph

Submitter: Matthew Kenworthy (Leiden Observatory)
Description: Coronagraphs are used with adaptive optic systems on ground based telescopes to search for exoplanets around nearby stars. The Apodizing Phase Plate (APP) coronagraph which modifies the incoming wavefront to suppress diffraction around a target star. I explain the principle of the APP and the first scientific results obtained with it at the VLT over the past two years, and also discuss recent improvements in fabrication.
