Measuring accurately the space density of galaxies as a function of their gas mass (the HI mass function) is a primary science objective for many future radio facilities. I will give a brief overview of past HI mass function determinations and what we have learned from them. I will discuss which questions related to HI mass functions still remain and how future facilities can address those.
